Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is the 2001 feature film adaptation of the popular Tomb Raider videogame series. Alicia Vikander stepped into the role in 2018, and Tomb Raider was a more gritty and realistic take on the adventurer's origin story. When the game franchise was rebooted in 2013, it was time for a new film and a new heroine to strap on the thigh holsters. The films were big blockbuster affairs and certainly entertaining, but criticized for their thin plot and over-the-top scenarios. Angelina Jolie may not have charmed all the locals at her most recent filming location but the people of Cambodia, where she shot Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2000, are said to have renamed a temple. Since then, players have followed the adventures of Lara Croft in over a dozen games, as the British globe-trotting and pistol-wielding archaeologist pioneered the action-adventure genre.
